Liability For Ford County Semi-Truck Accidents

Thousands of people are killed or seriously injured every year in semi-truck accidents. According to the IIHS, “Most deaths in large truck crashes are passenger vehicle occupants. The main problem is the vulnerability of people traveling in smaller vehicles. Trucks often weigh 20-30 times as much as passenger cars and are taller with greater ground clearance, which can result in smaller vehicles underriding trucks in crashes.” Truck drivers should take a number of measures in order to prevent collisions.

  • Truck drivers should check their blind spots before making turns on the road.
  • Truck drivers should slow down during periods of heavy traffic.
  • Truck drivers should be well rested before heading out onto the road.

Truck drivers are required to get a commercial license and are held to a high standard in terms of safety. They must do everything in their power to avoid hitting other vehicles. Many collisions involve drivers who make dangerous left turns. Pursuant to Illinois Vehicle Code (625 ILCS 5/11-707), no person shall make a left turn or U-turn upon a roadway unless such a movement can be made with reasonable safety. Victims of truck accidents tend to suffer very serious and costly injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

Depending on the facts of any case, the company that a truck driver worked for could be liable for a collision. Generally speaking, companies are liable for the wrongful actions of their employees – insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties. However, truck companies will often try to evade liability for collisions by hiring their drivers as “independent contractors.” This is why it is so important for accident victims to seek legal counsel as early as possible.
