John Deere Issues Recall For Compact Utility Tractors Because They Can Pose Crash Risk
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (October 6, 2024) – John Deere has issued a recall for its collection of Compact Utility Tractors because they can pose a crash hazard to users.
The recall was issued on September 26, 2024. Around 147,900 were sold, including 16,800 sold in Canada.
The problem with the Compact Utility Tractors is that the front bell linkage can fail. This can cause the tractor to lose braking, thereby resulting in a crash hazard.
John Deere has received four reports of the brake linkage failing. At least one person was hospitalized, and two other people sustained impact injuries.
A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.
Liability For Accidents Caused By Utility Tractors
Accidents involving farm tractors are unfortunately all too common. According to Public Health Reports, “The annual tractor-associated fatality rate for males based on the population of male farm residents was 23.6 per 100,000; rates of fatal injury increased with age for this population.” Tractor companies should take a number of measures in order to prevent accidents.
- Tractor companies should regularly test all of their products.
- Tractor companies may need to install roll-over protective structures (ROPS).
- Tractor companies should incorporate automatic locking systems for braking or disabling machinery.
Companies have a legal obligation to ensure that their products are reasonably safe. They must comply with all safety regulations from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. If a product has a design, manufacturing, or marketing defect, this could form the basis of a product liability claim. Victims of farm tractor accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
- Broken bones
- Head injuries
- Lacerations
- Spinal cord injuries
- Organ damage
The vast majority of tractor accidents are preventable. They often occur because companies neglect key safety issues that they’ve known about for a long time. Sadly, these same companies will often do everything in their power to deny liability when a person is injured by their product. Any person injured in a tractor accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
