NetZero USA Recalled High Bay LED Light Fixtures Because They Can Pose Serious Fire Hazard
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (December 27, 2024) – NetZero USA has issued a recall for its High Bay LED Light Fixtures because they can malfunction and cause a fire.
The recall was issued on December 05, 2024. Around 16,000 affected units were sold.
According to the recall notice by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the plastic pins securing the LED light fixture can degrade over time.
This can cause the LED board to come loose and come into contact with nearby items, thus creating a fire hazard.
The firm has received seven reports of the LED boards burning.
Liability for Injuries Caused by Light Fixtures
Fires caused by defective light fixtures are unfortunately all too common. According to the National Fire Protection Association, “Fire departments responded to an estimated average of 32,160 home fires involving electrical distribution and lighting equipment each year in 2015–2019. These fires caused an estimated average of 430 civilian deaths and 1,070 civilian injuries each year in 2015-2019, as well as an estimated $1.3 billion in direct property damage a year.” There are a number of reasons that light fixtures could become fire hazards.
- Commercial lightbulbs use higher wattage than traditional bulbs. They also produce more heat. They can easily cause materials to catch fire if they are placed too close to other objects.
- Damaged wiring with lighting fixtures can cause short circuits and electrical sparks.
- Defective ballasts with a light fixture can cause it to spark or overheat.
- Accumulated dust or debris in light bulbs can act as fuel for a fire if the fixture gets too hot.
Companies that create light fixtures must ensure that they are reasonably safe. To that end, these devices must comply with all safety standards by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. If a company creates a defective bulb that starts a fire, this could form the basis of a product liability claim. A company could also be liable for failing to warn consumers about the dangers associated with the use of their products. Victims of residential fires tend to suffer very serious injuries.
- Broken bones
- Head injuries
- Organ damage
- Lung damage
- Death
- Burn injuries
The vast majority of fires caused by light fixtures are preventable. They tend to involve situations where companies fail to follow safety guidelines. In particular, they must all use fixtures that are UL, ETL, or CSA certified. Any person that is injured in a fire caused by a light fixture may have legal recourse through a product liability claim. A product liability attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
