HallyBee Farmhouse Dressers, Sold Exclusively on Amazon, Recalled Due to Tip-Over and Entrapment Hazard

HallyBee Farmhouse Dressers Recalled Due To Tip-Over Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (January 19, 2025) – HallyBee Farmhouse Dressers were recalled because they can pose a tip-over and entrapment hazard to children.

The recall was issued on January 16, 2025. Around 122 dressers were sold prior to the recall.

According to the notice by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recalled dressers are unstable when they are not anchored to the wall. This could create a serious tip-over and entrapment hazard for children.

Also, the dressers do not comply with the performance standards of the STURDY act. The dressers were sold exclusively on Amazon. They came in two colors, which include a light and dark rustic oak.

There have been no reported injuries involving the dressers at this time.

Liability for Injuries Involving Dressers

Though injuries involving dressers may seem like rare occurrences, they are actually quite common. According to one analysis by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “CPSC’s new report shows that between 2000 and 2018, there were 459 reported tip-over-related deaths involving children 17 years old and younger.  Ninety-three percent of those child-specific incidents involved children five years old and younger.” There are a number of reasons that dressers could tip over on children.

  • Dressers could tip over and injure children if they have a high center of gravity.
  • Dressers could tip over and injure children if they have a narrow base and lack necessary supports.
  • Dressers could tip over if they have uneven weight distribution.
  • Dressers could tip over and injure children if they are supposed to be anchored to the wall and are not.

Companies that create dressers and other furniture have a legal obligation to ensure that those products are reasonably safe. They must comply with all safety standards set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. These companies must take into consideration all of the ways that their products could be used and even misused. Children climbing on dressers is a known phenomenon. To mitigate this hazard, dressers must comply with the STURDY Act.

  • Dressers must remain stable, even when all of the drawers are open.
  • Dressers must be stable, even when placed on uneven flooring.
  • Manufacturers must provide clear instructions about how to anchor dressers when this is needed.
  • Dressers should include warning labels, which highlight the possibility of tip-over accidents.

All clothing dressers taller than 27 inches must comply with the aforementioned requirements of the STURDY Act. When a dresser tips over and injures a child, the company that made the product or sold it in retail could potentially be liable. The family of any child injured in such an accident may be able to receive compensation for the child’s injuries. Sadly, though, companies will often do everything in their power to deny liability if their product injured someone. This is why it is so important for accident victims to seek the guidance of an experienced product liability attorney.
