Falah Hadi Died In Workplace Loading Dock Accident At Menasha Packaging Company In Alsip
ALSIP, ILLINOIS (September 16, 2024) – A worker identified as Falah Hadi has tragically died in an Alsip loading dock accident at Menasha Packaging Company.
Cook County officials say that the accident took place around 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday. Menasha Packaging Company was helping to guide a semi-trailer into the loading dock.
At some point, he became pinned between a parked truck and the semi-truck backing up. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victim.
Falah Hadi was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center with critical injuries. Despite life-saving measures, he died at the hospital.
A representative for Menasha Packaging Company said that the victim did not work for the company. He worked as a contractor for another distributor.
Liability For Alsip Loading Dock Accidents
Despite many years of improved safety standards, many workers are seriously injured or killed in trucking accidents each year. According to Transport Topics, “workers in transportation and material moving occupations experienced 1,620 fatal work injuries in 2022 and represented the occupational group with the most fatalities. The increase was attributed to an 8% rise in combined fatalities among truck drivers and driver/sales workers to 1,115 in 2022 from 1,032 in 2021.” Transportation companies should take a number of measures to help keep workers safe.
- Companies should ensure that all workers have comprehensive training on safe loading and unloading procedures.
- Companies should provide visible signs, floor marking, and communication systems.
- Companies should provide vehicle restraint systems to prevent trucks from loading during loading and unloading.
- Companies should ensure that loading docks are properly lit at all times.
When a worker is injured or killed in Illinois, they or their family will typically have recourse through worker’s compensation. Worker’s compensation does not take into consideration who may be at fault. In other words, a worker or their family will typically be able to receive aid no matter how or why a worker is harmed. In addition to workers compensation, a worker or their family may have recourse through a third-party liability claim.
A third-party liability claim may be possible when an entity separate from a worker’s employer contributed to an accident. A third-party liability claim may be possible if a general contractor or owner of a workplace failed to maintain a work site in a reasonably safe condition. For example, a loading area may have lacked safety barriers designed to prevent trucks from entering certain spots. It is important that evidence is properly preserved after any workplace accident.
- Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
- Medical records should be preserved.
- Surveillance footage should be sought.
- A thorough investigation by OSHA should be conducted.
Many workplace accidents are entirely preventable. Accidents tend to occur at locations with a history of safety violations. It is very important that the safety record of any company involved in a fatal workplace accident is properly understood. In far too many situations, companies may choose to prioritize efficiency, even when this puts workers at risk.
