Ceither Adult Portable Bed Rails Recalled Over Entrapment Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (September 21, 2024) – Ceither Adult Portable Bed Rails by Inforce were recalled because they can pose a serious entrapment and asphyxia hazard to users.

The recall was issued on September 19, 2024. Around 1,170 of the bed rails were sold. Consumers could purchase them exclusively through Amazon.

The major problem with the Ceither Adult Portable Bed Rails is that they violate federal regulations for adult portable bed rails. In particular, users may become entrapped within the bed rail or between the mattress.

No injuries have been reported thus far.

Liability For Injuries Caused By Adult Portable Bed Rails

Injuries and deaths involving adult portable bed rails are actually remarkably common. According to CBS News, “An estimated 69,000 adults were treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms for rail-related injuries from 2003 to 2019, according to the CPSC. Among those incidents, 260 cases involved adult portable bed rails, including 247 fatalities, according to a July 2020 CPSC briefing paper.” There are a number of potential issues with adult portable bed rails that could cause them to become dangerous.

  • Entrapment Risk: Adults with limited mobility may be at risk of becoming trapped between the gaps of the rail.
  • Fall Hazard: Bed rails are meant to prevent falls, but users attempting to climb over the rails are at risk of falling from a greater height.
  • Improper Installation: Even if a bed rail is perfectly designed, users may be at serious risk if it is not installed properly. When these rails are not installed properly, they can shift and create gaps.

Every company that makes consumer goods has a legal obligation to ensure that their products are reasonably safe. They must comply with all regulations by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Companies must take into consideration all of the ways that their products could potentially be used and misused. When a company fails to warn about the non-obvious dangers of their products, this could form the basis of a product liability claim. Companies should take several steps to ensure that their products do not become hazards.

  • Companies should rigorously test their products in a variety of different settings.
  • Companies must clearly label their products and provide user manuals when necessary.
  • Companies must quickly recall their products when they become aware of safety issues.

Injuries and deaths involving portable bed rails are nearly always preventable. They tend to involve products that fail to meet safety requirements. These products are primarily used in care settings such as nursing homes. It is also possible that staff at these facilities are not properly trained in how to install the devices. The family of any person who died due to an adult bed rail may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim.
