Bauer 4-Gallon Battery-Powered Backpack Sprayers Recalled Over Fire Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (November 15, 2024) – Harbor Freight Tools has issued a recall for its Bauer 4-Gallon Battery-Powered Backpack Sprayers because they can be a fire hazard.

The recall was issued on October 31, 2024. Around 53,000 units were sold.

The main issue with the sprayer pump is that chemicals can leak into the battery compartment and cause it to catch fire. Harbor Freight Tools has received 8 reports of the battery overheating, including incidents of it catching fire.

Liability For Lithium-Ion Battery Fires

Many fires are caused by lithium-ion batteries and chemical incidents. According to Prevention Web, “Over 825 hazardous chemical incidents – including fires, explosions and harmful chemical releases – have occurred since the beginning of 2021, and over 270 incidents have occurred this year alone, according to data published today by the Coalition to Prevent Chemical Disasters.” There are many chemicals that can cause residential fires.

  • Gasoline
  • Ethanol
  • Acetone
  • Propane
  • Methane
  • Ammonium nitrate

Companies that make consumer products that make use of chemicals or lithium-ion batteries have a legal obligation to ensure that they are reasonably safe. They must take into consideration all of the ways that their products can be used or misused. If a company creates a product with a design defect, this could form the basis of a product liability claim.

  • The risks of a product may not be justified by its benefits.
  • A product may be hazardous because there are foreseeable ways it will be misused.
  • A product may lack common safety features found in other products in a given industry.

Many fires caused by consumer products are highly preventable. They tend to involve situations where companies engage in cost-cutting measures. It is common for safety features to be erased when it comes time to make a product cheaper. Unfortunately, companies will often do everything in their power to deny liability when their product causes consumers to be injured. This is why it is so important for victims to seek legal advice as early as possible.
