Liability for Garbage Truck Explosions

Many people are injured in natural gas explosions every year. According to WBTV, “In the past 12 years gas leaks have led to explosions that have claimed dozens of lives, injured hundreds of people and wiped entire neighborhoods off the map, federal data shows.” A large number of gas explosions have involved vehicles. There are a number of reasons a gas cylinder on a vehicle may explode.

  • The cylinder may be overpressurized.
  • The cylinder may be exposed to heat.
  • The cylinder may have a damaged valve or safety mechanism.
  • The cylinder may have corrosion or other physical damage.

Depending on the facts of any case, there could be numerous sources of liability for a garbage truck explosion. For example, the company that made a garbage truck’s component parts could be held at fault. Generally speaking, companies are liable for accidents caused by defects with their products. If a gas cylinder on a truck was defective in some way, this could form the basis of a product liability claim. Victims of natural gas explosions tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Burns
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Head trauma

It can be hard to know where to begin after being injured in a garbage truck accident. Victims may need to take extensive periods of time away from work. They may also be saddled with high medical bills. Victims may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim. A personal injury attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
