Truck Accident - December 30, 2024
Garbage Truck Driver Didn’t Put Lift Down Before Colliding With Bridge by Illinois Route 29 and Veterans Drive in Pekin Within Tazewell County
PEKIN, ILLINOIS (December 30, 2024) – A garbage truck was involved in a collision with an SUV in Tazewell near the intersection of Illinois Route 29 and Veterans Drive.
Tazewell County officials are saying that the incident took place around 10:43 a.m. on Friday. A garbage truck collided with the bottom of a railroad bridge.
Police believe that the driver of the garbage truck failed to lower the lift on the back of the truck prior to the collision. The force of the crash caused the garbage truck to roll over and collide with an SUV.
Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victims. A full investigation into the Pekin garbage truck accident remains ongoing at this time.
Liability for Pekin Garbage Truck Accidents
Thousands of people are killed or seriously injured in truck accidents every year. According to the National Safety Council, “in 2022, 120,200 large trucks were involved in crashes resulting in an injury, a 2.5% increase from 2021. Since 2016, the number of trucks involved in injury crashes has increased 18% and the involvement rate per 100 million large truck miles driven has increased 5.7% to 37.” Garbage trucks can be particularly dangerous for several reasons.
- Garbage trucks tend to operate almost entirely in residential areas, where pedestrians are most likely to be walking.
- Garbage truck drivers tend to work during the early morning hours when pedestrians may be less visible.
- Garbage trucks tend to have large blind spots that can obscure the presence of pedestrians and smaller vehicles.
Garbage truck drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid collisions. Trucks must be very cautious around pedestrians. A number of pedestrian collisions occur when garbage truck drivers make unsafe left turns. If a garbage truck driver fails to lower their lift and causes an accident, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of garbage truck accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
- Broken bones
- Head injuries
- Lacerations
- Spinal cord injuries
Many of the injuries associated with garbage truck accidents may not be immediately obvious. This is particularly true when a victim sustains a head injury. It is also common for victims to suffer long-term psychological injuries, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Any person injured in a garbage truck accident may have legal recourse through a civil claim. A personal injury attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
