Mamibaby and Cosy Nation Baby Loungers Recalled Over Suffocation Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (August 16, 2024) – Mamibaby and Cosy Nation Baby Loungers have been recalled because they can pose a suffocation, fall, and entrapment hazard for infants.

The recall was issued on August 15, 2024. Around 32,250 units were sold. The recalled Mamibaby and Cosy Nation Baby Loungers were recalled because the sides are too low to contain infants.

The sleeping pad is also too thick, which can create a suffocation hazard. These violations create an unsafe sleeping environment for infants.

The product was manufactured in China and sold on Amazon by MEIXIA Shop and Softbless.

Liability For Accidents Involving Baby Loungers

Baby loungers can be dangerous in ways that many parents would simply not suspect. According to one report by NBC News, “In addition to those four deaths, NBC News determined that at least 21 other babies died in infant loungers from December 2015 through September 2021, more than twice as many deaths as the CPSC cited in public warnings about specific brands of loungers.” There are a number of ways that infant loungers could be unsafe.

  • Infants could face a suffocation hazard if the sides of the lounger are too soft.
  • Infants could fall from loungers if the walls are too high and they are placed on elevated surfaces.
  • Infants can choke on smaller parts of loungers if those parts are not properly attached.

Companies that make baby loungers have a legal obligation to ensure that those products are reasonably safe. Product liability claims can be based on negligence, strict liability, or breach of warranty. Several types of defects could create the basis of a strict liability claim. For example, a baby lounger may have had design defects that made it unsafe. Design defects are inherent to the way that a product is made. They exist before a product is manufactured. It is important that evidence is properly preserved after any infant injury involving a lounger.

  • All receipts related to the purchase of the product should be preserved.
  • Medical records related to the incident should be collected.
  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • An experienced product liability attorney should be contacted.

Accidents involving baby loungers are nearly always preventable. They tend to occur when companies violate safety regulations. This could be because they are trying to rush a product to market. Or they may simply be ignorant of the regulations in the first place. It is important for accident victims to understand that they do have rights. The family of any infant injured by a baby lounger may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
