Horwitz, Horwitz & Associates is committed to educating the public regarding failed nursing home and assisted living policies and the continued lack of response from the State Department of Health & Human Services, as well as the Dept. of Aging. We're committed to informing the public when the laws currently available are not being enforced, as well as when the strength of those laws are weakened due to unfair influence by the powerful nursing home industry.

In the wake of failed legislation that would have enhanced quality nursing home care, as well as recent appellate court decisions that further restrict the rights of residents, it's clear that long overdue enhanced protection for nursing home residents is nowhere in sight. In fact, recent decisions have pushed our goals back several years and made our frail and aging citizens more vulnerable today than ever before to crimes of unthinkable abuse and neglect.

Clearly the lobbyists for the corporate nursing home owners and the industry itself are getting their money's worth at both the state and Federal level, and are pushing for further reform that will reduce or remove, their liability for, and responsibility to those they are entrusted to care for.

Today, anyone searching for a quality nursing home for a loved one in the state of Illinois will only find 2 in 10 that are free of citations that signal ongoing abuse, neglect and other environmental roadblocks vital to quality care. In some communities, the number of quality facilities may be even fewer or non-existent, and those with citations are under no pressure to make necessary corrections that would align them with state and Federal laws currently on the books.
